Since starting my new Plan with the help of those cool dudes Rich Sennewald and Ben Coomber @ Body Type Nutrition I have had to Eliminate Diary and Gluten.
Throughout my studies and research on the Paleo Diet and other Science Papers these two Pesky Individuals have always cropped up and now and again I have tried to cut them out but failed.
Protein shakes were too difficult to say no to as I had to get in my protein PWO as quick as possible and I am a sucker for good Beer so the Gluten content has been there most weeks. Now and again I like to eat Bread and Ali Oli or some Pasta.
Having sat down and really looked at where I want to be both on an aesthetics and performance level and turning 30 this year I guess it was time to face facts. As the mighty Phil Learney says “You have had a cheat meal everyday for all your life” so it time to get serious.
I am sure a vast number of people would really benefit from taking out Gluten of their diet. I just don’t think anyone can say they perform at their best after eating Pasta and Bread and even Oats. Sure the carb intake is there but what about your gut, seriously, how do you feel after you have eaten?
Bloated, decreased energy, irritable, headaches?
I feel this every time, throw Beer into the mix and forget it! And I love beer :(
Celiac disease, the condition caused by an abnormal immune response to gluten, can damage the lining of the small intestine and cause mal absorption of nutrients. I don’t think I want to be in the position of eating food that can damage gut lining especially when this can cause problems such as Stomach Cancer. Is that bowl of pasta or oats really worth it?
“Oatmeal is a superfood” you scream. Well not really.
“The main problems with oats are the phytic acid and the avenin, a protein in the prolamine family (along with gluten from wheat, rye, and barley, and zein, from corn)” says Mark Sissions “phytate has the tendency to bind minerals and prevent their absorption. So, even if a grain is rich in minerals, the presence of phytate prevents their full absorption. Ingestion is not absorption.“
As for dairy it’s a case of if you can handle it. Some people do not notice any problem with drinking milk or eating cheese and again “WHAT ABOUT CALCIUM?” you shout.
Kale contains more calcium per calorie than milk (90 grams per serving) and is also better absorbed by the body than dairy.
“Milk is for Babies” Arnold
I just don’t understand why we are the only Species on the Planet that drinks milk intended for another Animal, it doesn’t make sense. Granted there is the Protein and Calcium argument but I have ruled out one of those above.
Remember. We are not what we eat or drink but what we can ABSORB.
Milk and milk products contain lactose, a natural form of sugar. Lactase, an enzyme produced by the small intestine, helps your body digest lactose by breaking it down into simpler types of sugar. Lactose intolerance occurs when your body doesn’t make enough lactase to completely digest the sugars, forcing the undigested lactose to remain in the intestinal tract.
“Some causes of lactose intolerance are known. Certain digestive diseases, such as Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis, celiac sprue (an inherited disorder affecting the lining of the small intestine), other inflammatory bowel diseases, and injuries to the small intestine (surgery or trauma) may reduce the amount of lactase available to process lactose properly. If the small intestine is injured, lactose intolerance may be temporary, with symptoms improving after the intestine has healed” Cleveland Clinic
Again, is this something you really want to chance?
Take them (Gluten and Dairy) both out of your diet for 30 days and see how you feel.
I for one have found:
Better Sleep Pattern
Enhanced Energy
Weight Loss
Overall Gut Health
I have made some significant changes in my life.
I have moved away from Family and Friends at home then moved away from my Country. After a few years I moved back again. I have left jobs on good terms and walked out on bad ones. I have changed careers and then had to change back again. I have left Girlfriends I loved and valuables behind and lost some money, but I look back now and I don´t regret any of it.
Well, to be honest, I regret a lot of the things I have done but the experiences I have had have made thankful that I have learned somehow, one way or another.
I left Birmingham when I was bearly 16yrs old, searching for happiness. All I have ever wanted is to be happy in my life, enjoying what I am doing and being proud of what I have done. I don´t believe there is ¨true happiness¨as life will always throw some shit at you to bring you down but you damn well fight back, don´t you?
I recently spoke to someone back in the UK about the sunny warm Weather change we seem to be having here and the response I got made me run home and write this.
It was quite simply depressing, I felt sorry for this person for a short while, then I got a little angry as what I heard mostly was ¨Your lucky¨, ¨I wish¨, ¨I could never do that¨
FUCK THAT! STOP! BEFORE I GO ROCKY ON YOUR ASS!
You can do whatever you have to do to make those dreams and wishes come true. You need to move? What is stopping you? Money? Then change jobs or negotiate a pay rise? Hate your profession? Then ttop spending an hour on Facebook moaning to your Friends that you have just seen at the Pub not long ago about how shit everything is and go spend that hour at a Uni Course, or do it online! You want to break up with you Boyfriend but you afraid it will hurt? Stay with him then, BE MISERABLE! Want to lose weight? Put that pint down and those crisps!
You have to do it yourself! Yes there are people who can help you but YOU need to be the one that make the changes. It´s all too hard? then continue to live in the world of ¨what if?¨
Being stuck in a dead-end job, relationship, Country with crap Weather or anything else that brings you down and makes you depressed needs to be changed, STOP saying ¨One day I will¨ JUST DO IT, DO IT NOW AND BE HAPPY or you will turn 60 and your life will have slowly passed you by and you will say, ¨Shit, I could have been awesome¨
Born in the 80′s and a rebel by the 90′s I admit to experimenting with drugs.
I can’t say they were not fun, but I can also say they didn’t do me any favours in the long run either!
Last night after a 2 hour Practice in the rain, I left half my body weight in sweat on that field, still shaking in the dressing room I struggled to untie shoe laces due to trembling fingers and mustered up enough energy to speak to my QB in brief about the Paleo Diet.
Once I was changed and left SON MOIX (Voltors Home Ground) a warm euphoric sense came over me, a WOW that was f£%king great!
My body was tired but my brain was alive, I was content with what I had done, pleased at my contribution to practice (although I always feel I could do more) and I was RELAX.
This euphoria is one of natures greatest highs, no other drug will get you in that state, and if it does there will be HUGE side effects.
Endorphins are released after strenuous exercise and these are small, cell produced protein molecules that can relieve pain and have a natural relaxing effect.
The feeling after giving it your all on the field, in the Gym or out on a run will no doubt keep you wanting more, that’s an addiction but it’s an addiction worth having, and it’s free! The only thing you have to do is work hard at what ever you’re doing, even cleaning your house. It’s a sense of achievement after putting in maximum effort.
American Football is no joke, I don’t care if we wear protection unlike Rugby. We LEAD with the head and we hit HARD and this could be the only downside to endorphins, they block pain!
I wonder how many times you have done some exercise or played a sport and once finished, cooled off, stretched and hit the shower that you notice a slight muscle pain or bruised ribs from impact but during the exercise or practice you battled through, without a feeling, pushing yourself to make that tackle, hit a new time or a new PB on a lift then once it’s all over, maybe even hours after, you “come down” and your body starts to tell you, “your hurt”
After my shower last night and eating my post workout meal (White Rice, Veg and Chicken) my wife looked at me in horror and said, ” OMG look at your forehead”
Well all I can say is that last night, I was leading with my head, and I was hitting hard!!!
I felt nothing.
I have just spent the past 20 Mins pulling my Dog Marli around the streets of Palma looking for a shop open @8am that sells Coffee. Your probably wondering why I didn’t just go into a Cafe and get one? I guess I never thought of that, I was destined to buy the Coffee and get home and write this!!
Although I titled this “Addicted to Coffee” I guess I am not, I don’t drink 3-4 a day! I have Two. One Black, One With Coconut Milk about an 1-2 hours later, then I stop. It has done its function for the day and is currently helping me get back in shape, as I will put my hand up and say I had lost my way, just a little, but we will move onto that shortly.
I used to scorn at the cues of Morning Workers rushing to get their coffee at 7am, blurry eyed, fidgety, angry as they had to wait longer than 5 mins for a Milky Frothy Double Shot of Expresso laden with Sugar and maybe heavy cream and some even syrup. I used to hear “I can’t function without my morning Coffee” and used to think WTF?
I think more than anything I was mad at them, not for the dependence of Caffeine but more to the rest of the crap they would load it up with. I never understood the reasoning for Coffee in the morning. My thoughts were you should get up, shower and get on with your day, the thing is now I know how good Caffeine is for you, for health and for Fat Burning I have become that “Zombie” mentioned above, but A good Zombie!

Study after study show compelling evidence that Caffeine increases metabolism and free-flowing fatty acids allowing you to use stubborn fat as energy, so there is no need to add sugar for a “boost” guys! Being in a fasted state my Insulin levels are low, I am a fat burning machine right now and adding sugar is going to raise that Insulin and I am going to move in to a fat storing machine, not good.
I drink 1 Black Coffee when I wake then do some low intensity Cardio like this morning, (pulling my dog around looking for more) then the second cup is with Coconut Milk. Coconut Milk is full of MCT or Medium Chain Triglycerides which help promote fat loss (1) it also taste fantastic. You can also add Heavy Cream instead if you can tolerate Dairy.
I am a big fan of IF or Intermittent Fasting. There have been studies on the benefits on this but I guess we will wont really know the real outcome of these studies for a few years. Many pass it off as a fad, just like the Paleo Movement. Personally I think IF has some amazing benefits. I highly agree with its control of Hormone levels in the morning, especially as mentioned before with Insulin and burning fat. I think it really helps with Digestion allowing our digestive enzymes time to regenerate and it really makes me a lot more alert throughout the morning, even without Coffee. I have never been good at waking up and eating and I certainly would notice I felt like crap after a bowl of Oatmeal and Protein source but that’s another article.
It’s definitely going to be a tool in my training and nutrition plan that going to be me back on form.
Since moving to Palma I have had a few struggles. During this time I threw all my Training and Nutrition out of the window. Although training for the American Football Team I have skipped Gym sessions on numerous occasions and have indulged in some late nights and some seriously wrong food choices. I have kicked myself, said “right, tomorrow is the day to get back on it” then that day would never come, I regret it, and physically it shows but it’s behind me now, time to get focused!
I decided to get some help. In steps Ben Coomber and Richard Sennewald of Body Type Nutrition (BTN)
The mighty Phil Learney was recently interview on Ben Coomber Radio (A fantastic Podcast on Nutrition and Fitness) and I was very interested to get in touch with them. More than anything I needed to reinforce my studies, and get something written by someone else that I didn’t have to get stressed about writing myself.
There is no doubt these guys know what they are talking about and they have similar views in IF, Paleo, Gut Repair.
I am happy I found out about them. Check them out BTN
Here we go…
As from the end of September we will be leaving Ibiza for Palma Mallorca. Due to Personal reasons I will be entering the Kitchen again and am very excited to be back! Ibiza and our friends here have served us well over the years but it’s time to move on and move forward.
I will ALWAYS be training and am looking forward to join The Voltors American Football Team here as a DE in the near future.
Come see me at La Poule Touqée in Palma :))
This is a great workout I am currently using.
There is no need to Single out Body parts like Men’s Health will tell you, leave that to the Genetic Freaks and Body Builders.
4 times a week in the gym, lift heavy, use Compound Movements and add in some assistant exercises and your set.
Sprint twice a week and use Phil Learney’s Ab’s Strength Workout before or after the Sprint session.
Obviously watch your Nutrition and rest accordingly, but that goes without saying, right???
Let me know how you get on!!
